Unleash The Sloth

As game industry professionals continue to clamber over each other in an effort to leach themselves into our conciseness, UBM Tech's Game Developer's Conference  enjoys a multitude of coverage in the news with a full day of 2014's event yet to commence.

Already, PlayStation have used the event to launch their latest prototype for Project Morpheus. Despite an incredibly predictable press event, the concept is certainly exciting. This has been in the pipeline since before Tomorrow's World promised us robot maids so to see a prototype which is finally light enough to wear like sunglasses is definitely encouraging.

PlayStation predict this virtual reality headset will be available to consumers in America in a year, transforming the world of gaming yet again. Combine this with the next generation graphics which already display wonders in games such as Forza 5 where gloves can be seen reflected in the windscreen and it is no longer too much of a stretch to imagine a world where gaming becomes preferable to the real world.

One way or another, life as we know it is coming to an end. Bleek? Yes but we've had a good run. I firmly believe 'consumerism' will be the last of the human ages. It's just a question of whether Yellowstone can beat us to our own psychological destruction. Each generation can only hope that we live just short of oblivion.

On a brighter note, this also means it's never been easier to achieve more comfort with less effort. Everything from our clothes to the most basic technology we would no longer dream of using is more powerful than the wildest fantasies of the elite as recently as five decades ago. Proof, if it were needed, that no matter our class, race, religion or background, ultimately we all have egocentric achievements and unfulfilled desires. In fact it seems the only truly happy animal is the sloth.

After all, this is the one animal with no concerns. He does so little he need only absorb the energy of a leaf to sustain himself and a branch to hang from is all he could ever want for. This is certainly a fulfilling life but is a total lack of achievement really the way to live?

Well clearly, being the high maintenance blog reader you are, you'll want some sense of closure from me. It's amazing and moreover flattering, how suddenly, just because I am the author of what you're reading, I've become the barometer for everything that makes you happy. Granted I've asked for it by creating this premise but its a curious power dynamic.

How about this then; the mentality of a sloth is to put in no more energy than is necessary to live the life he wants. That doesn't mean not to make effort or go over and above to achieve but there is a way of doing so which I would say is far better than what most of us do.

Take myself as an example. I currently travel four hours per day to do an incredibly badly designed university course for which I depend on other people for my grades. Something about this clearly doesn't make sense yet the psychological barrier telling me there is no other way has always held me in this routine. So what's the answer? Do I continue chasing a certificate which will be added to hundreds on the desk of an arrogant media 'tycoon' and instantly binned? Or does it make far more sense to decide 'fuck the media', put effort into this and other freelance ventures and, as they say, never 'work' for a second.

Hence, closure. We're living in an age of prosperity beyond any other time in history yet programmed to believe effort in the conventional sense is required to achieve fulfilment when in fact the opposite is the case. It is precisely by not making any effort at all that we can be sure we're doing the right thing because it will be enjoyable and therefore not feel like effort. Yes someone has to collect the binbags from our driveways but someone will see the benefits of this job within the context of their specific life. So the meaning of life - 42: Unleash The Sloth.
